The Unit Manager will lead all aspects of the manufacturing operations and continuous improvement activities of their respective area of a plant, business unit, or value stream to meet customer and company expectations. While this is a supervisory role, this person will still play a hands-on in working on the floor with other team members in addition to providing direction to order fulfillment coordinators and team leaders, and strong collaboration with other functional departments within the company.

Our client is a multimillion-dollar grating manufacturer that delivers blends of artistry and safety in their products. They assist their clients from design efforts through to manufacturing and even custom fabrication services in architectural, bridges, environmental, industrial, parks & rec, and public transportation industries. 

Job Functions

  • Provide positive leadership to ensure compliance with safety goals and environmental programs
  • Lead performance of all business unit function to control and manage production, maintenance, and materials to ensure customer orders are produced and shipped in accordance with job specifications, established quality standards, and projected manufacturing costs
  • Responsible for the overall efficiency of production of processes within their business units to meet performance objectives
  • Lead in the coordination of training to achieve operational excellence throughout all processes within the business unit
  • Direct and monitor the flow of production, analyze and investigate delays, troubleshoot and resolve unusual problems
  • Set and/or modify production schedules as necessary to ensure profitability, timely service, and quality of service to customer base
  • Provide support and feedback to the Plant Manager
  • Must be able to use measuring devices such as calipers and micrometers
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office
  • Provide feedback to associates and conduct regularly scheduled evaluations
  • Conduct timely performance appraisals for all production associates and support staff
  • Maintain effective lines of communication and cooperation between departments and functions within areas of responsibility
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or an equivalent amount of relevant work experience 
  • 3 years of direct manufacturing and supervisory experience 
  • Shop floor manufacturing experience
  • Experience in steel processing/fabrication 
  • Continuous improvement experiences including Kaizen, 5S, waste, or standard work
  • Understanding of daily cadence and lean management techniques is preferred 
  • Strong communication skills 
  • Effective listening skills, strong interpersonal and team-building skills 
  • Organizational and planning abilities
  • Positive attitude 
  • Ability to multitask and follow-up with a sense of urgency
