Position Summary: 

  • The employer is seeking a dynamic and sophisticated communication professional with experience in traditional print journalism and online media and news platforms. 
  • The position requires strong strategic planning, leadership, analysis, and writing skills to support internal and external communication needs on behalf of the firm and the organizations it serves. 
  • The Senior Communication Manager will lead strategic efforts to synthesize complex policy and client materials in a format that supports the needs of a variety of internal and external audiences. 
  • The position requires some expertise in issues that impact historically marginalized communities including but not limited to systemic racism, poverty, and related social justice matters.

Job Functions: 

  • Lead the development of plans and strategies to support client communication needs.
  • Develop communication content in a wide variety of styles and tones, with varying breadth and depth, for multiple formats and distribution platforms.
  • Participate in, listen to, and synthesize information from meetings, client conversations, and research to develop communication materials to support client needs and firm marketing purposes such a newsletters, eblasts, and social media content.
  • Ensure quality control of all written materials produced for clients and internal marketing content.
  • Manage marketing-related subcontractors, as needed.
  • Analyze and summarize large amounts of information, data, research, and policy into various communication pieces including special reports, one-pagers, advocacy materials, FAQs, analyses, white papers, case studies, newsletters, web and social media content, and various client deliverables. 
  • Eventually, this position also will support media relations activities such as opinion editorials, letters to the editor, and the development of editorial calendars. 

Ideal Candidate Qualities & Experience: 

  • 8+ years of proven on-the-job writing experience, in a senior-level or strategic capacity
  • College degree in a related area preferred
  • Print journalism background preferred
  • Excellent copy-editing skills
  • Advanced, direct, and demonstrable experience with a variety of assignment types and writing styles for various audiences
  • Expertise in at least three of the following areas of policy: 
  • Government 
  • Non-profits
  • Philanthropic organizations
  • Early care and education
  • K-12 education 
  • Medicaid
  • Workforce development 
  • Health and human services (e.g., criminal justice, housing, food insecurity, youth development, mental health)
  • Eye for detail, quality, thoroughness, and accuracy
  • Strong listening and note-taking skills
  • Demonstrated curiosity in firm and client issues 
  • Thorough fact-checking abilities
  • Ability to work in a virtual environment with accountability and integrity
