How To Use Facebook To Get Your Next Job

You may know Facebook as the world’s most popular social media platform, but did you know that it also has one of the fastest-growing job boards that companies of all sizes are utilizing every day?

In February 2017, Facebook opened up its new job board feature, where employers can post jobs directly to their company page, and job seekers can apply to them immediately through Facebook. This new-ish feature often goes unnoticed by most Facebook users, but we can teach you how to go about using the most familiar social media platform to get you your next gig!

Updating Your Profile

First things first, you need to update your Facebook profile to accurately reflect your current and preferred contact information and work history. This is essential because Facebook has a feature that can create a complete resume for you just with the click of a button using the information you enter here! And while it’s a super convenient tool, if you don’t have up-to-date information in the ‘About’ section of your profile, Hiring Managers will have no way of knowing if you’re a good fit or how to contact you.

  1. After logging into your Facebook account, click on your profile (which will be your name and profile picture) on the top left of the screen.
  2. Once your profile pops up, click on ‘Edit Details’ of the Intro section.
  3. Here you will find your ‘work,’ ‘education,’ and ‘current city’ sections of your profile that you’ll need to update. Blue plus signs will appear at the bottom of each section for you to click.
  4. Add at least five years of work history, including company name, position, location, and a brief description of your work and any accomplishments during your time there.

When updating your profile, it is important to include any and all education, work, and extracurricular experience you have. This includes High School, College, non-profit, volunteer, and side work. By filling in all the blanks, you’ll not only have a stronger resume when you apply to jobs, but it will help recruiters that use Facebook as a sourcing tool to find you, so you don’t have to do the work!

However, we can’t forget that Facebook is a social media platform first, and we all know the importance of taking caution of what you share on your social platforms by now. When it comes to Facebook’s job board, here are some easy ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ of what you should and should not share to ensure you get the job while keeping your personal information private:

  • DO share informational articles or sources on your feed that are related to your industry and work interests. This will show employers that you’re passionate about your work and take an interest in what they do.
  • DO share personal information about your interests that you are comfortable making public. Communicating you enjoy friends, family, and fun is a great way to show your personality and help you find a place that will be a good culture fit for you.
  • DO share special events related to your personal and professional interests. Showing that you go the extra mile displays a strong sense of community, a sought-after trait by many employers.
  • DO have a complete social media profile with all the blanks filled in. This will improve your credibility and make you more likely to be found and taken seriously by employers.
  • DO NOT share pictures of your Driver’s License, Passport, or Credit Card as these contain personal information you do not want to make public.
  • DO NOT  share complaints, rants, aggression, or controversies regarding your professional or professional life. 54% of employers reported ruling out candidates due to finding something they didn’t agree with on social media.
  • DO NOT share any other information you would not want to be made public or known by a current, former, or future employer. They will see it!

Now that you’ve taken the time to update your profile to be eye-catching and discoverable by recruiters, it’s time to explore the hundreds of thousands of opportunities on Facebook’s job board. Luckily, they’ve built a simple interface for users that mirrors the industry-leading job boards like Indeed and CareerBuilder.
